No Whey Smooches Review

Vegan Hershey Kisses? No Whey!

Yes way 😉 And no, that isn’t a typo. If you haven’t heard of No Whey Chocolate, stop what you’re doing and go check them out. They are hands down the best tasting vegan chocolate I’ve had.

Scratch that, they are just one of the best tasting chocolates I’ve had. Period. Without milk they’ve managed to make a silky smooth, sweet treat. And they’ve done it without weird ingredients or anything that leaves a funky aftertaste.

No only is No Whey vegan, they are top 9 allergen free. This is a big deal. Many people with an egg or dairy allergy look for vegan products because they don’t contain their allergen. As someone who has allergies but is vegan by choice (for those new, I’m dairy intolerant – not allergic – and outgrew my egg allergy) there is definitely a difference between allergy friendly products and vegan products.

Vegan

Veganism is a choice. Some people will allergies will gravitate towards vegan products as a starting point because they are made without their allergens (usually egg and dairy are what we are referring to here). However, you need to remember why these products are being made and who they are targeting.

People go vegan for one of three reasons: Environment, health, or ethics. Did you see allergies on that list? No. That means when people are mass creating vegan products, their target audience is not people with allergies. They are not in the mindset of share equipment or facilities or having protocols in place to ensure there is no cross contact at any point in the process. Their goal is to produce a food free from animal containing ingredients.

Allergy-Friendly

This is a different term completely. And you will see me avoid the terminology “allergy-free” on purpose. Anyone can be allergic to anything so it’s impossible to have a truly allergy free food.

When making things for the allergy community there is an entirely different mindset that needs to be adopted. It’s more than making sure the particular food isn’t in the ingredient list, but also going to great lengths to ensure the finished product does not come in contact with any of the listed free from items. This can include the equipment used to make the product and the facilities they’re made in.

Where Does No Whey Fit into This?

That’s a great question! No Whey chocolates are top-9 allergen free. That means they are free from wheat, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame. Their equipment and facilities are free from these items as well making them truly safe for the allergy community.

In addition to being free from major allergens, No Whey is committed to being vegan. One would think since they are chocolate and they are already free from dairy and eggs that it’s obvious they would be vegan. However, animal products show up in s many ways in sweets. It can be in additives, food coloring, gelatin, the list goes on.

No Whey has committed to keep their amazing treats free from animal products in addition to allergens. And did I mention it tastes delicious? I couldn’t ask for more!

New Product: Smooches

So back to the Smooches. No Whey has been busy away creating one product after another that mimics an unsafe mainstream candy. They’ve got alternatives for peanut butter cups, Twix, M&Ms, and more. Now, they’ve added another allergy-friendly copycat to the mix. Smooches are an even better tasting version of a Hershey’s Kiss.

I’m not sure I’ve ever hit purchase so fast. I knew we had to give them a try. And they did not disappoint! These delightful little morsels were everything I hoped for. The chocolate looks and tastes the same as their milk-less bar which I already knew we love so the taste was as expected. In this case, it was alllllll about that presentation.

The package was a bit smaller than I was hoping for, but that’s not completely unexpected with allergy-friendly items. I opened it up and there were 10 pieces of red foil wrapped drops of chocolate. This brought back so many memories!

The actual drops themselves were a little bit bigger than a traditional kiss, but that’s ok. The chocolate is so good I was excited to have a bigger piece. Kiddo hasn’t had up traditional chocolate kisses so she had nothing to compare it to. Still, she was incredibly excited to open it up and try them. There’s just something about unwrapping that foil that brings joy.

She gave them a huge thumbs up as well.

I know these are meant to rival Hershey’s, but I’m actually going to throw it out there that they also remind me of the individually wrapped Dove chocolates. I was actually hoping for a little positive saying on the inside! The size and quality of the Smooches is more comparable to Dove based on what I remember. Hershey’s I remember as being more of a crumbly texture and not a very good chocolate. Definitely the cheap stuff. Dove was always smooth and melt in your mouth. No Whey absolutely achieved the silky meltiness that makes my mouth happy.

And what a beautiful thing to bring to the allergy-friendly and vegan community! I’m giving these a solid 10/10 for both taste and presentation. This product opens so many opportunities to create classic items like peanut butter star cookies (definitely going to have to make an allergy-friendly version of those) and more.

I’m so thankful to companies like No Whey that are willing to get creative and bring great tasting treats to the masses so no child has to feel left out.
