Mary’s Gone Cheezee - Review

A couple weeks ago I was walking through the grocery store and finally found the Mary’s Gone Cheezee crackers. I had seen people posting about them on social media, but this was my first time seeing them in the wild.

A vegan and gluten-free Cheez-It dupe? Sign me up! I grabbed the box without a second thought. I wasn’t the only one that was excited, my husband doesn’t have allergies, but he’s always open to trying alternatives.

After sitting for a few days, we finally opened up the box.

My First Thoughts

When I opened the box… I mean, disappointment is something I’m used to when it comes to allergy friendly foods, but this surprised even me. The box was already smaller than a normal size box of Cheeze-its, but there was barely anything inside! I paid more than $5 for this box and there was little more than a handful or two inside.

Amount of product aside, I still had hope. We are fans of the rosemary crackers. Surely this company knew what they were doing before trying to duplicate a product so many people in the allergy and intolerance community are missing.

Finally, I picked one up and gave it a try… and chewed twice before spitting it out.

Something you should know about me, I eat almost anything. Even foods I don’t really like (like mushrooms), I can eat. Especially if I’ve paid money for them or it’s about to go to waste. I hate waste.

These though? It was a unanimous verdict. Shawn, kiddo and I all hated these. The cracker was crunchy, but the taste was beyond awful.

Where I Think They Went Wrong

I’m pretty good about being able to tell how something will taste based on the ingredients or if something is off figuring out why. In this case, I suspect the culprit is chickpea flour as the main ingredient.

Chickpea flour has a very distinct taste. In this case, it overpowered everything else and it was all I could taste. I’m sure this ingredient is what allowed the cracker to be crunchy, but by not offsetting it with other, stronger flavors completely ruined what could have been a good thing.

I am putting these on the, “Oh for the love of all things holy, never buy these nasty things again!” list.

Have you tried these? I’d love to know in the comments if your thoughts were similar, or maybe we have unique taste buds!
