Ghastly Ghosts Craft

We are really going all out for Halloween this year, and I just can’t get over these cute little ghosts we made the other day!

This project didn’t take long at all but the end result made us so happy and looks great next to the spider webs we made. This did require a bit more help from an adult because there’s a whole lot of hot glue and I didn’t want Kiddo to burn herself, but there were plenty of steps that were easy for her to be involved in as well.

This was part of our trip to Michael’s, but really all you need are some Macrame, a piece of cardboard, hot glue, and black construction paper. I’m guessing you’ve already got most of that hanging around, but you can find links to what I used HERE.

This craft took less than a half hour to complete and is really beginner friendly. Even if you mess up the lengths, you can always go back and trim them when your done so try not to over think things as you go.

Here’s what you’re going to do. Start by cutting your carboard into a half circle. This is going to be the shape of the ghosts head so while it doesn’t have to be perfect, keep that in mind.

Next up, decide how long you want it to be. This will be relative to the size of the cardboard you use. Obviously a smaller ghost would have shorter strands. I ended up cutting about 3 inches off mine when I was done because it looked too long.

I know that isn’t exact measurements, but this is art! Make it your own. Do what looks right for your own project.

Start with your first length of the macrame and glue it along the cardboard. Each piece you cut will be a little shorter than the last because it’s taking a shorter route along the cardboard. As you go, it’s going to start to look like a little rainbow with long tassels coming off the ends. That’s what you want!

Glue the strands right up next to each other and avoid leaving any gaps. Don’t worry if as you go the ends aren’t all the same length, I ended up cutting mine so there was a variation as I felt that was more ghostly appropriate.

Keep going until you don’t see anymore cardboard.

This is where your kids can really get in on the action. Have them cut out some eyes and a mouth from the construction paper and then help hot glued those to the face. I didn’t have any, but googly eyes could be hilarious here.

Then, take all those ends of the macrame and unravel them. This was actually a lot of fun. It was kind of like braiding in reverse. I loved how it turned out because it was this beautiful, flowy look to the bottom.

You know what? That’s it! Take a second to admire your beautiful creation. I added mine to the wall next to the Spooky Spiders we made last week and it will be a fun little display that trick-or-treaters can see when they come to the door.
